I use SpiceWorks 3.5 to document and manage a lot of functions on my network. The best part about it is that it is free! I don’t know why so many administrators refuse to document their networks.

Maybe they feel it helps their job security, but in the long run, this can become quite a problem. You need to have documentation on all your systems and equipment – just in case!

Spiceworks will help you document, map and find out about what is going on with your network. I am talking about drives with no space left, full event logs, security issues and much much more!

If you have used SpiceWorks in the past and have never tried version 3.5, boy are you in for a treat! Get ready to see printer toner levels and specific computer-related errors. Take control of your network today!

You can download Spiceworks from www.spiceworks.com. As I said, it is a free download. Here are the installation requirements:

    System Requirements
    • Windows XP Pro SP2, Windows Vista, Windows 2003 Server SP1, SP2 and R2, & Windows 2008 Server
    • 1.0 GHz Pentium III class processor
    • 1.0 GB RAM
    Browser Requirements
    • Firefox 1.5 - 3.0
    • Internet Explorer 6.0 - 7.0

The best part about Spiceworks might be that it is free, but coming in a close second would be the awesome community that helps support this application. If you have a problem or issue, just ask the community and be prepared to be wow’ed by the speed and ease of the answers.

Let’s check out how to install SpiceWorks. I suggest using a machine you are not using for anything else. It does not have to be that powerful, but the more RAM, the better.

    spice1

You can click the above image to start your download. Once you are done downloading the file, you are ready to install. Simply double click on the Spiceworks.exe icon and run through the setup. The first screen will tell you what port Spiceworks will run on. Please make a note of this. In this case, as you can see in the following picture, it runs on port 9675.

    spice2

Spiceworks will take a few minutes to install – you will see a status bar while you wait.

    spice3

When the install is done you will get this screen:

    spice4

Choose if you want the desktop shortcut installed as well if you want to run the program after you hit finish. Once you run Spiceworks you will be greeted with it’s startup screen.

    spice5

You will then be required to sign up for a free account. Just fill out the form and submit it.

    spice6

Now we are ready to start!

    spice7

Click “Start with Inventory” to begin. Next we will click Scan my entire network to get the ball rolling.

    spice8

The program will ask you if this account has administrative access to your network as well as if you are running any Mac or Unix systems. If you are, you will need to give the proper credentials for these boxes.

    spice9

That’s it! Now hit start and wait while Spiceworks does its magic!

    spice10

    spice11

It picked up Active Directory groups and users and tells you that it will list them unless you tell it otherwise:

    spice12

Be patient, this step can take quite some time depending on your network. A larger network with more devices obviously will take a lot longer than a 4 computer workgroup. At the top of the screen you will see “Network scan in progress click here for more information”. By clicking there you will see a real time log of what is going on. This is great for people with no patience!  And there is even a link below that to take you to the actual log. Every action performed by Spiceworks will be displayed here.

You can also click on “dashboard” and look at what it has already discovered. That should keep you busy for a little while.

You can click on the tabs and browse around. You can see hard drives that are less than 25% free as well as any authentication issues. These are shown by a triangle in the lower right hand corner of the computer. You can see this on the shot below – look at the second machine in on the second row. Do you see the icon? That machine’s username and password was obviously not the network standard. Look at what we can see already!

    spice13

By clicking on a computer, let’s see what we can see by default:

    spice14

Now what if you don’t want 25% as your warning indicator for hard drive space or if you want to monitor other things? Great question!

Just hit monitoring on the left and let’s see what we can change:

    spice15

And there are still more options that you can add my clicking “add new monitor”!

Look at all that geeky goodness at your finger tips! You have the IP, Username, Manufacturer, Model,Type username and much more. There is a network troubleshooting button to help diagnose machines as well as events. Once you load up Spiceworks. you can monitor your network at a glance and see what is going on. You can add custom fields to help you better monitor and manage your network.

Hopefully, your scan is has now completed (mine took 45 minutes to do 200+ devices). Then you should see this on your Spiceworks inventory home page:

    spice16_over

All your devices will be categorized and listed and network issues will be displayed at the bottom of the screen. In my environment, a few machines that either had their windows firewall on or were not part of my domain were not able to be scanned. This can be corrected by adding their proper credentials or opening the proper ports.

And all this is just on the inventory/management side. You can also use Spiceworks to do help desk ticketing!

If you ever used Spiceworks, what do you use it for? Would you like to see a more detailed explanation on any of its aspects? Let me know in the comments and I will be more than happy to oblige!

    Multimedia Copywriting

It’s no secret that the web is moving more and more toward video and audio content. Text is still going strong and will always be a prominent part of the web content mix, but the shift to multimedia will only continue and intensify.

And for some, this is very good news. Not every one is (or wants to be) a great writer, and audio and video content can allow these folks to shine.

So does copywriting matter if you’re not dealing exclusively with the written word?

Well, given the subject matter of this blog, what do you think? :)

The answer, of course, is an unequivocal yes.

In fact, multimedia combined with a strong working knowledge of how best to present information (which is what copywriting is all about) can make you an incredibly engaging and influential web presence. All you need is a nudge in the right direction.

So here’s what’s covered in this Multimedia Copywriting series:

    Stay tuned…

With the Conficker virus set to go through a currently uncertain change tomorrow (April 1), here are seven ways to be sure you’ve protected your machine against the fallout.

Don’t panic: The chances are the April Fool’s Day deadline has been overhyped. All that’s known for certain is that the number of potential website addresses infected computers will try to contact will rise from 250 to 50,000. There’s no certainty this change will be accompanied by any change in behaviour among the machines.

    Don’t be complacent:
Even if nothing happens tomorrow, Conficker is still a powerful virus which gives far too much of your computer’s security away. If you have it on your machine, you should get rid of it immediately, regardless of any ‘deadlines’.

    Take a quick check:
Even if you are convinced your machine is safe, take a quick visit to Microsoft.com, Symantec.com and McAfee.com. If you are unable to access these sites, your machine may be blocked from doing so by Conficker (to prevent you getting security updates). If this is the case, run the free Conficker removal tool from http://bdtools.net/.

    Plug the gap:
Once you’ve removed Conficker, make sure to immediately run the Microsoft Update service along with the update features on any security software you run. These facilities may have been blocked while you were infected, meaning you could be missing important security fixes for problems other than Conficker.

    Use trusted sources:
Don’t be tempted to simply search Google for ‘conficker virus’. While many of the resulting links will be credible and trustworthy, the chances are some will be from peddlers of scamware, rogue software which claims to remove viruses but are simply a way to get control of your machine or add your credit card details to a suckers list.

    Protect your network:
If you are a network administrator, you have likely found it impractical if not impossible to find and isolate the virus because of the need to scan every machine in full. The good news is that this is no longer necessary. Researchers have discovered that Conficker leaves behind a trace in a specified part of a computer’s filesystem (the processes which run before a user logs in to Windows). This has allowed them to develop a tool with a much quicker way to scan an entire network. You can download the free tool at http://iv.cs.uni-bonn.de/wg/cs/applications/containing-conficker/

Be patient: The increase to 50,000 randomly chosen domains on the virus’s ‘phone-home’ list greatly increases the chance that it will mistakenly hit active and legitimate websites. If you find a site slow to load tomorrow, it’s possible (if statistically unlikely) that it’s been a victim of this effect. This doesn’t mean that the site has been infected, merely that it is overloaded with visits from infected machines. If you are struggling to access a website and it’s not an absolutely urgent visit, leave it until later and try again.

Ten years ago, you had a wide range of excuses for being a lousy visuals person. Starting with no talent, leading to no skill and going from there.

But now, in a world where it is expected that professionals will be able to make beautiful powerpoint slides, handsome business cards, clever bio photos and a decent website, it's as important as driving. And easier to learn and do, and requiring less talent.

No, you and I will never be gifted designers or breakthrough designers. But there's really no reason not to be really good.

I put together a page with some blogs, books and sites you can check out. An hour a day for a month and you won't have to hide your face in shame. Sure, hire the very best in the world when you need a breakthrough. But you don't have to pay for better-than-mediocre design. You can do it yourself.

(Update: as expected, I heard from a few designers, upset that I would recommend that anyone do pretty good design. The thing is, as a designer, if all you can offer is a time-saving way to get pretty good design, that's a tough row to hoe. The magic for the great designer is that once someone understands how to see, understands how powerful great design can be... they are going to be the first person who wants to hire you.

The fact is, business people do copywriting, simple legal and accounting work and more, on their own, every day. You compose your own email, don't you? If your legal decisions were as bad as your design, you'd get fired in a minute for libeling people. Getting pretty good at things is merely a first step, but one that you need to take in order to be ready to spend the money to get great.)

    By Sterling “Chip” Camden
    Contributing Writer, [GAS]

Richard Demming wrote a short story called “The Shape of Things That Came” back in 1950.  The story, set in 1900, is about a writer who has traveled forward in time to 1950 and back again.  He tries to publish a story about the future technologies he has witnessed, but it’s rejected — the editor says it’s unbelievable because with so many advances in only fifty years, it’s impossible that everyone could take them for granted.

I read this story for the first time just last year, and I had to wonder what a modern version of it would look like with all the advances in technology we’ve seen since the fifties.  Just as in Demming’s story, today we take even the most recently introduced gadgets as commonplace components of our lives.

Now TechRadar has published nine predictions for the future of computing over the next fifty years.  If I’m still alive in 2059, it would be interesting to compare how closely reality follows these prognostications.  I’m guessing that they’re pretty far off the mark, given the history of such predictions and the accelerating pace of technology.  Even looking forward five years into the future is getting pretty dicey, never mind fifty.

For instance, take the predictions about photonics.  This is a technology that already exists.  Is it realistic to think that no better alternative will be developed in fifty years?  And will it really take that long for computing to reach zettascale?  Will advances in display, storage, speech, and touch be only refinements on what we already have?  Think of all the innovations in computing over the last fifty years and then tell me we can’t do any better than that.

But the one that really got my goatee is the ninth and last point: “Being a geek won’t matter”, because everyone will possess geek powers.  A commenter named “matrixdweller” captured my reaction precisely:

Making the assumption that everyone will be geeks would be like saying, back in the early 20th century, that everyone would be an auto mechanic since automobiles would proliferate to a great extent. The more concise conclusion would be that everyone would know how to drive.

Sure the technical know how of the average person will far exceed that of the average person today. Similarly on how each generation’s technical know how is more advanced than the preceding generation’s (my parent’s still can’t set their digital clocks). There will always be those that have a more advanced comprehension of a subject than the general population.

Of course there will be geeks — they just won’t be working on problems that will have already been solved for fifty years.  Instead they’ll be exploring new technologies that haven’t even been dreamt of yet.

    Long live geeks!

A factor which cannot be overlooked when designing websites, brochures or e-magazines is the all important font type.

Designers need to carefully select the font that best fits the style of the publication, is legible and perhaps a little different from the norm.

There are plenty of retro and urban fonts available for download, however many are very expensive. For those on a limited budget, here are some amazing free urban and retro fonts.

    Victor Moscoso

    Victor Moscoso

This funky retro font is based on the 1960’s psychedelic poster lettering of Victor Moscoso. It is hard not to think of Cadillac’s and American diners when looking at this font. Compatible with both Windows and Mac computers, it is free for personal use and contains a full set of characters and numbers.

    Watson

    Watson

Watson is a retro font that still has the wow factor but is also simple and elegant. The lettering is skinny and some of the characters appear three dimensional. Best of all it’s completely free to use, compatible with Windows and Mac computers and contains a full set of characters and numbers.

    Thuphap

    Thuphap

Categorised as a brush font, Thuphap looks like freehand writing. The ink weight varies on the curves of the letters, as it would naturally do if you were writing on a piece of paper. It is completely free to use, compatible with Windows and Mac Computers and contains a full set of characters and numbers, including several special letters.

    Cinema

    Cinema

This retro font is a flashback to the 1950’s movie theatres as it uses the same style as the old billboards and posters. The cinema font set contains all the standard letters and numbers, as well as 17 additional characters. It would look great on a film review website.

    JF Ringmaster

    JF Ringmaster

JF Ringmaster is simply stunning. This retro font is exquisitely designed, with suggestions of a carnival or circus. It is bold and sassy, and it would look equally at home on an Old Western Saloon sign. Completely free and available for download for both Windows and Mac computers, it contains the full standard character set and a few special characters but no extended letters.

    Acorn Initials

    Acorn Initials

All these letters are set in uppercase and behind each one is an acorn leaf. Beautifully sketched, these letters are quite busy but intricate and detailing. It is free to use, but Acorn Initials is only available for download on Windows computers.

    Deco Caps

    Deco Caps

Simple in design but distinctly retro, the Deco Caps set is amazing. A serif font face with a twist, this set is extremely well crafted. The lettering isn’t overpowered by the design but it is still very arty. Free to use and compatible with both Windows and Mac computers, Deco Caps only contains standard lettering and no numbers.

    Francis Mirtha

    Francis Mirtha

Another amazing retro font, the Francis Mirtha set gives the appearance of hand drawn lettering that has been filled in with ink. The ink weight varies within each letter, giving the overall ‘filled in’ look. Free to use, a full set of characters is available for download on both Windows and Mac computers.

    Action Is

    Action Is

Bring back the swinging sixties with this funky font. This hippy style shouts flower power and is ideal for a fun website or blog. It is completely free to use and is compatible with Windows and Mac computers. It contains all the standard letters and numbers, however all the letters are in uppercase.

    Aajax Surreal Freak

    Aajax Surreal Freak

Categorised as decorative, this font set is fun and quirky. Belonging to the handwriting collection, it is bold, squiggling and will certainly catch attention. The font set is completely free to use and is compatible with Windows and Mac computers. It contains all the standard letters and numbers, as well as several other special characters.

    Urban Sketch

    Urban Sketch

The army styled lettering resembles characters created using a pencil stencil and it even looks like the letters have been filled in by pencil. It is completely free to use and compatible with both Windows and Mac computers. It contains the full set of standard letters and numbers, as well as several special characters like & and @.

    AcidDreamer

    Acid Dreamer

AcidDreamer is certainly different. Its letters look like they were written by an unsteady hand, although they are all very legible. The shading also makes the lettering look embossed. Compatible with both Windows and Mac computers, the set is free to download. It contains a full set of standard letters and numbers, as well as a few special characters like % and $.

    Urban&Slick

    Urban & Slick

This font has only recently been made available for download. Most of the skinny characters either start or end in arrows, making the overall style interesting and different. The set is completely free to use and compatible with both Windows and Mac computers. Most of the letters are in uppercase, with the exception of the i, j and y.

    Argor Got Scaqh

    Argor Got Scaqh

This stunning font wouldn’t look amiss as a newspaper header. Reminiscent of a bygone era when men wrote by candlelight using ink quills, this gothic font is simply beautiful. Compatible with both Windows and Mac computers, it contains a full set of characters and numbers, as well as a few additional letters.

    Aenima

    Aenima

Messy calligraphy is the best way to describe the Aenima font set - some of the characters even have ink blotches. The set is completely free to download, however it is only compatible with Windows computers. It comes with a full set of standard letters and numbers, as well as several special characters like @ and %.

What would be the next step after playing music with a tesla coil? Stepping into the music yourself, wearing a Faraday suit, of course! Patrick from ArcAttack does just that, with an appropriate theme song. A comment at Metafilter says it all: “Now, see, if Vader had offered THIS to Luke as one of the benefits of the Dark Side, well, things would have just ended up a lot different.”
