A early blood transfusion from lamb to man

The nine-year-old Mozart was not, as suspected, a midget adult. This and many other fascinating revelations are uncovered in a collection of historic scientific documents unveiled by the Royal Society this week.

The society, formed in London in 1660, began publishing a journal titled Philosophical Transactions five years later – a journal which remains in print today. It has now republished 60 of the most notable articles in an interactive timeline which is probably the closest thing to an accessible history of scientific discovery as you’ll find.

The first article, from 1666, is an account of the first ever blood transfusion (from one dog to another), while the most recent is a 2005 look at ideas to combat global warming such as putting a trillion sunshades into space to filter the sun’s rays.

Among the most historically notable articles are Isaac Newton’s explanation of how “white” light is a mixture of other colors, Benjamin Franklin’s experiments with attracting lightning by flying a kite, the invention of the first electric battery, and the proof that fingerprints are unique.

Other lesser known articles cover a boy who was born blind but had his sight “restored” (which showed that depth perception is a learned skill), a first-hand study showing that despite his natural talents, Mozart was as easily distracted as any other child, and a look at continental drift (the summary for which notes that continents are moving apart faster than the human fingernail grows.)

Each article is printed in its entirety along with a brief summary, accompanying images and links to further information.

It’s not always easy to get gifts for the geek gal in your life. We’re a curious bunch, with varied interests and influences, often with our own sense of specific style. Some of us are makers, some are crafters, some are scientists, some are literature nuts.

So, this Cyber Monday, I thought I’d put together a few sexy gift ideas that might work for your geek gal, as well as a few hints for shopping, selecting sizes, and adding that special personal touch to her gifts.

    - Custom Dice: Perfect for the gaming geek, and a sexy, sexy thing to behold! At Chessex you can custom design dice, with some rather impressive results. Perhaps there’s a certain script that would work, or a symbol that her character is associated with.  If custom isn’t up your alley, consider Dwarven Stones and Dwarven Metal – made of rock or metal, these little shinies are sure to be a hit at the tabletop next encounter.

    - Firefly: The Complete Series DVD - Currently it’s on sale at Amazon for a remarkable $38.49 which includes free shipping. (or, as GAS reader Matt points out–today 11/30 you can get it at Best Buy for a shockingly cheap $10.99!) Quite possibly the best show that never was, Firefly has a special place in the hearts of many a geek girl. Not that Nathan Fillion in Western-inspired gear has anything to do with it. Um. I’ll be in my bunk…

202- Urban Decay Makeup: Contrary to stereotypes, plenty of geek girls love makeup, especially with a sense of humor and gorgeous colors. And with shades like Ransom, Graffiti, and Corruption, who can resist? While they’re a little pricey compared to the stuff at the convenience store, with free shipping on orders over $50, and some seriously gorgeous packaging (and earth-friendly/vegan items) you’ll likely find your geek lady treasures it. Not sure about colors? Well, no worries with Urban Decay. Really, it’s about fun an experimentation! (Not to mention, you can always return unused stuff… or check out her makeup and see what colors she likes.)

    - Want something even sexier? How about geeky panties? You know, those private jokes you share (pun intended). Word to the wise, though. Don’t just assume you know the size of your lady’s er, derriere. Buying too-big or too-small underwear might not go over that well. Thankfully, it’s not hard to figure out her underwear size. You go to her underwear drawer and cleverly extricate a pair, flip it over, and read the size. See, not that hard! Order accordingly.

    - The sexiest accessory I’ve seen this season: fuchsia driving gloves. If your geek gal loves her car as much as I do, but hates bulky, slippery, useless gloves, consider something like these gorgeous fingerless gloves. They actually come in four different colors, but I’d never consider anything but black or pink.

Naamah's Kiss- Geeky, sexy books are always a good choice. Two series I’ll recommend, if your geek lady likes to tow the line between fantasy/sci-fi and romance, by particularly well-written ladies Diana Gabaldon and Jacqueline Carey. Gabaldon is more well-known, and as reluctant as I was to read the whole time-traveling Highlander tale, I was surprised to find such engaging, detailed, historically-based writing. And her characters are wonderfully endearing (just keep in mind that you may find yourself buying a kilt before all is said and done). Carey is much more fantasy-based, and her most well-known series revolve around heroine Phèdre, an anguisette and professional courtesan (to use a term… but not exactly). Carey re-creates Judeo-Christian mythologies and repurposes European history to create a truly unique, and wonderfully sensual, world. Both have new books out, as well – Carey’s Naamah’s Kiss and Gabaldon’s An Echo in the Bone. (On a side-note: if you’re looking for something really special, consider buying a signed book for her; there’s nothing so sexy as her knowing you listen to her talk about her favorite authors and took the time to seek out a special edition.)

    - If she happens to be into corsetry, and you have a little extra cash on hand, how about this anatomically correct skeleton corset from Etsy artist louiseblack? There’s something remarkably geeky and sexy about this particular pattern, with just enough tongue in cheek that any geek gal can appreciate!

Stay tuned for more gift guides for the girl geeks in your life!

    Twitter

Many bloggers already know that Twitter is one of the best ways to drive traffic to your blog.

When I talked to Guy Kawasaki about my book, he called the Tweetmeme Retweet button “the most important button on the web,” because of the enormous traffic-driving power it possesses. With one click, any of your readers can spread your post to hundreds or thousands of their followers.

As a marketer, I, of course, see this as an opportunity for optimization. When I see a powerful tool, my first impulse is to figure out how to make it even more powerful.

When you click that button, Tweetmeme grabs the title of the page it’s on, shortens the URL, and combines the two into a autofilled tweet for posting. Thus, the title of your post becomes the tweet that is shared with a potentially huge number of Twitter users.

If the importance of compelling headlines wasn’t painfully obvious before, it should be now.

Nearly 20% of all “normal” tweets contain a link, yet almost 70% of retweets do. Retweeting is the most common way links are shared on Twitter.

I’ve done research into various factors surrounding retweets and found a handful of factors that you may want to take into consideration when writing headlines for posts that you hope to share and spread on Twitter.

    Use nouns and third-person verbs

    image of a chart

When I looked at the parts of speech that occur in retweets versus those that occur in normal tweets, I found that retweets tend to be noun-heavy and use third-person verbs.

This pattern is reminiscent of newspaper headlines. Highly retweetable headlines talk about someone or something doing something.

A headline should never talk about all the things you did yesterday and how you did them, as past-tense verbs and adverbs both lead to far fewer retweets.

The most (and least) retweetable words

    image of a chart

The words that tend to occur more in retweets than in normal tweets are topped by the word “you.”

This means, whenever possible, you should talk directly to your readers. “Top” and “10″ also rank highly, showing that lists do well on Twitter. Not surprisingly, talking about social media and Twitter itself also helps.

    image of a chart

On the other side of the coin are the least retweetable words. Random first-person verbs and details about your life, however fascinating you may find it, don’t get a ton of retweets.

    Tell me something new

    image of a chart

I compared how common words in retweets are to how often these same common words appear in normal tweets, and found that rare and more novel words are highly retweetable.

When you’re writing your headlines, you should be striving to say something new that breaks through the clutter of everyday chatter.

    Don’t be dumb

    image of a chart

I expected to find that retweets were simple and required less intelligence to understand. But my data showed the opposite.

Using two readability metrics, I found that retweets often use longer, more complex words. So don’t try to “dumb down” your headlines for Twitter; users and power retweeters are smarter than you may think.

    Stop talking about yourself

    image of a chart

LIWC is a linguistic system designed to identify concepts in pieces of text.

The most striking thing I found when using LIWC to analyze retweets is that self reference does not get a lot of sharing.

In other words, don’t talk about yourself if you want Twitter traffic; talk about your readers.

If you’ve been in social media awhile, you probably already guessed that was the case — now you’ve got the data to back it up.

"How much life insurance do you have?"

Zig Ziglar liked to say that with that one question, you could tell if someone was a successful life insurance agent. If they're not willing to buy it with their own money, how can they honestly persuade someone else to do so?

If you're in the music business but you never buy tickets or downloads, can you really empathize with the people you're selling to?

My favorite: if you work for a non-profit and you don't give money to charity, what exactly are you doing in this job? I've met some incredibly generous people in the charitable world, but I can also report that a huge number of people—even on the fundraising side—would happily cross the street and risk a beating in order to avoid giving $100 to a cause that's not their own. And the shame of it is that this inaction on their part keeps them from experiencing the very emotion that they try so hard to sell.

Money is more than a transfer of value. It's a statement of belief. An ad agency that won't buy ads, a consultant who won't buy consulting, and a waiter who doesn't tip big—it's a sign, and not a good one.
